Blog 21: Planned and Percieved Obsolescence

Obsolescence is a product that have become outdated and can no longer as well compared to the newer product. Planned obsolescence however is when a company designs a product in a way that it becomes unless and outdated within a planned amount of time, and to make the consumer buy the product again, and percieved obsolescence is a product that fuctions perfectly well, but are made outdated and is percieved as obsolete because a newer product was released.

    In “Let Them Eat Fat” by Greg Crister, agues that even though fast food and national chain restaurant have been criticized and disapproved by nutritionist and dietitians, these companies are still growing and are becoming more aggressive in there persuasive advertisement. Most of the targeted people are inner city blacks who are poor. I believe that the author is wrong in that they are specifically targeting blacks, and Mcdonalds is not wrong for doing what they have done, a business does what is good for business.

    The author believes they are targeting inner city blacks, however I don’t believe that is to be true. Here in N.Y there are many different races, and not only blacks. In N.Y you see Asians, Hispanics, Indians, whites, and various other mixes, and I see all these different races in fast food restaurant. Critser, also states “hat one in four Macdonald’s hamburgers are purchased by blacks, however I question these stats and their accuracy. Macdonalds, has a restaurants all over the world, and each continent there are different racial groups.

    People need to understand that advertisements are just ads. whether you listen to the ad or not it all comes down to the you, either you listen to the ad and buy fast food or you don’t. One can’t blame Macdonalds for their bad eating habits. The  can bu do so much, but in the end you have the choice.

   Macdonalds doesn’t only target one race it targets the world. The business will do what ever it takes to get you to buy their product. But in the end it’s still you that makes the final decision.

Blog 14: Revision of CAT Practice #2

In the article “The dangers of Reality” by Timothy Sexton , Sexton believes that viewers are brain washed into believing knowledge and education are worthless compared to what is shown in reality shows. I agree with Sexton, I believe that reality shows are promoting unhealthy competition, and education is key to success. 

    Jersey Shore is a good example of unhealthy competition. In which we see many of the characters competing for a girl. Most of the character are making bets among themselves. This arises the competitive spirit within each individual to do anything in their power to win over a girl. This is seen as unhealthy because many are driven to do stupid things to win the bet, like in Jersey Shore, where one see’s the “Situation” who is a character in the show, and he would sweet talk to a girl, lie to them about their looks, and even influence them into getting drunk. All this was the outcome of a personal bet not only within himself, but also with his peers from the show. 

    Education is an important asset in ones life, and with out it one would be walking blind as in a cave. Many shows have diminished the idea of education for example in the show Fear Factor, where there is no logic in the games the contestant’s face games such as, eating animal gonads, eating roaches. There is really no theme of education instead they promote one to not use their brain, and instead eat animal gonads, which is really disgusting. These ridiculous reality t.v shows should not be shown. If more shows were to show derivative of an equation, or the graph of sine, tangent, cosine, we would be better off and smarter. Instead of being influenced by these ridiculous t.v shows. 

    In today’s society some reality shows show unhealthy competition, and ignore the importance of education, but I agree with Sexton, and believe these elements should not be in a reality show. 

Blog 15: Bottle water safer than tap?

Is bottle water safer than tap? how so, when all the evidence points otherwise. Tap water in the U.S. is regulated by the EPA(Environmental Protection Agency). The EPA has set extensive regulations on tap water and it's production, distribution, quality, and regularly test their source and quality. The FDA are the guys who regulate bottled water. Unlike the EPA, the FDA do not regularly test bottled water and their facilities. Test have shown that bottled water are inconsistent, for example a bottle water from one company could be clean, but another bottle of the same origin would be so contaminated, it wouldn't be save for drinking.
   Did you know bottled water can go bad and expire? Actually it's not the water itself that goes bad, it's the chemical and toxins that make up the bottle. Over time the chemical in the bottle will leech into the water, and you will have Deadly-ious plastic flavored water! Exposure to heat and sunlight can hasten the process of chemicals and toxins leeching into the water. God know how long and far those bottles have travel into our markets only to be displayed in the sun next to the fresh fruits.
