Blog Entry 5: Developing a Thesis on "I Know the Truth".

1. Significant Idea: Garrett cites a body of studies showing that when subjects are presented with data that contradicts their beliefs, they often paradoxically respond by sticking to their biases even more strongly.

2. Claim: R.Kelly Garrett is right, people don't like being told they are wrong.

3. Reasons: People feel stupid when they are wrong. Pride is worth more than intelligence.

4. Thesis Statment: R.Kelly Garrett's research is right, people don't like being told they are wrong, because we don't like being told we are unintelligent, and our self image is much more important.

Blog Entry 4: "My Place in the Cave".

In " The Allegory of the Cave" by Plato, Socrates explains to Glaucon how it's like when someone believes in something their whole life, and is then told their believes are false. Socrates explains how these people are chained to their beliefs, and how if they were release from these chains they would be lost momentary, but will see the truth if they seek out what is really real. Socrates said if one who knew the truth/reality were to force someone else who believes in their own believes, that their beliefs were false, they would ridicule him.

In my cave, I feel I'm at the point where I'm free from my chains, I see the exit, but I fear whats out there.
I'm at the point where I feel I can go do anything I want in my life, no one can stop me anymore. But there are so many paths, I want to take 'em all, so I feel confused. Why I only have one life, how can I achieve all my goals in such a short time?

Blog Entry 3: Summarizing "I Know The Truth"

In " I Know the Truth, So Don't Bother Me with Facts", The author Jeffrey Kluger believes humans are easily deceived by rumors and lies. R. Kelly Garrett and Erik Nisbet, assistant professors at Ohio State University, did a study on rumors, 750 people reported believing unconfirmed rumors. Garret and Nisbet were surprised at how easily people's beliefs are swayed by suggestive and vague images. Even on case where evidence is presented contradicting what a person may believe, less than a third are willing to compromise. On the event that the few  that do research the facts, they often do not try that hard. We have to do our research and make our own decision on what is reasonable.

    Blog 2: Reflecting on Annotation

     1. After discussing annotations with my classmates today, I feel I've gotten better at taking notes, for when I write essays about an article/story.
    2. When I discussed the article "is Google Making Us Stupid?" today with my class, I didn't understand why, If Google/Internet was fast, would cause us to think superficially and shallow. Until she compared google to a calculator and how a calculator would give you the answers but won't show you the steps to do a problem on your own, if it was unavailable.
    3. When I annotated the articles, I felt it was a lot easier to understand, and I could gather up the main ideas and my opinions better and easier.
    4. Annotating can make me a better writer, when I need to find the main idea gather my opinions and review important ideas.

Blog Entry 1: Diagnostic on "Hype"

Hype by Kalle Lasn, Is about how America is flooded by tons of corporate advertisements, and how it’s in your everyday life, you can’t escape it. The author believes the amount of advertisements has been increasing so steadily and unrestrained and is unhealthy, that the consumers doesn’t realize that their lives revolve around ads, brands, and product placements.
Advertisments are everywhere nowadays and has effected all our lives. Especially people who buy the latest brand names, and flaunt them like monkeys, and you know monkeys. Monkey see monkey do, we the people have to fit in. We can't be the only ones sticking out like a sore thumb. To fit in to society, to survive, we have to adapt. survival of the fittest, in this case the one fitted with the best brands.
Kalle Lasn Thinks advertisments is overflowing our world and is causing us to become unhealthy brandname drones. But if oneself can believe in the self and not having the need to rely on society and what society thinks is needed to survive. Their are always limits oneself has before we start to really harm ourselves, so I think Lasn need not worry, if he believes in the human race.
